Star Gazing

"Stargazers", watercolor, 15"x20", 2013

Lilies have been associated with purity for thousands of years. Pictures of lilies adorned the walls of unearthed ruins of a home on Crete that is dated at 1580 B.C. Ancient Greeks believed that white lilies grew from the milk of Hera, the queen of Greek deities. Lilies were important throughout Greek and Roman mythology. The word "lily" is derived from the Greek word "leiron", which is believed to refer to the white lilies that were later called Madonna lilies, symbols of chastity, purity and virtue.

  1. Holly,

    beautiful!
on what paper is it painted? Is it thick?
I'd like to bid (saw it on ebay), but I'd like to know if it's Arches or something similar and not too thin..

    Thanks!

    1. Hi there!
"Stargazers" was made on Canson Montval Aquarelle fine Cold Press paper - 140 lb. It's not 300lb (got too expensive @ $16/sheet!) but the 140lb is plenty sturdy and high quality archival to boot!
I just sold a piece at Sotheby's on the same kind of paper for $2,400.00 - a lovely surprise! Anyway, the ebay auctions at $100 are quite a steal, if I may say so myself :)
Thank you so much for your kind words and I hope these flowers someday brighten your wall!
      With Sincerity,
      Holly
